<p>Part One of this series introduced the topic. Part Two was about setting the right mindset. Now is the time to evaluate some mathematical equations for measuring social media ROI.</p>

I’m only taking a look at 3 of the equations she proposes today due to time &amp; space constraints. I recommend reading her full post when you have some time to dedicate to this topic.</p>
<p>Without further ado, here are the mathematical equations.</p>
<p><span style="color: #008000;">11) Support Value &#8211; Online Self-Service:</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #008000;">GOAL: Enable Self-Service, Reduce Support Costs</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #008000;">Example:  Estimated 1,500 weekly support calls at which 70% could be resolved online via self-service at an equivalent support call value of $6.30 each = $7,056 equivalent call support value</span></p>
<p>I chose Item #11 about online self-service because this is something that a robust social media and web presence can impact. Online self-service applies to all brands, but I believe that this would have more relevance for brands in product categories where the average price point for the product offering is higher and the product category lends itself to extensive questions. As an example, I think Dell would be more inclined to apply this equation to their social media efforts more than Dairy Queen. What I like most about this equation is that it considers consumer mindset in wanting to engage with the brand in the social sphere. When there’s a pressing post purchase concern, visiting a company website and perusing the social media sites of the brand are pretty common behaviors towards resolving that concern.</p>
<p>One of the keys to successfully implementing a social media presence based on this idea is creating website &amp; blog content that addresses the most common service concerns. The website and blog content can easily be used for social media updates. These posts should be blended with brand building posts as well.</p>
<p>Effectively handling these items in the social media space could lead to enhanced customer retention and future brand loyalty as well, which isn’t directly addressed in the equation. However, retention is an item that most brands value. Many brands know exactly what retaining an existing customer is worth vs. finding a new one.</p>
<p><span style="color: #008000;">13) Sales Value &#8211; Social Leads (Lifetime Value):</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #008000;">Example:  Estimated 100 qualified leads routed to sales teams with a typical lead-to-conversion rate of 4% at an average customer lifetime value (LTV) of $22,500 = $90,000 equivalent converted lead new customer lifetime sales value</span></p>
<p>Looking at this one, I see how companies in the B2B space would really be attracted to this, and many B2C companies would too. Brands with self-identified longer sales cycles would like it.</p>
<p>When one considers this equation within the MIT Management Review mental framework from the previous article, the equation gets murkier. The MIT Management Review was clear about wanting measurement of social media ROI to come from the incentives of the target consumer for using social media. In this equation, one wonders how the # of qualified online social leads identified is defined by the brand. Is this based on target consumers self-identifying? Is it based on evaluating a list of names of Followers on Twitter? I know I’d need greater clarity on this part of the equation.</p>
<p>Lead to customer conversion rate is really a good thing to know. There’s often statistics out there industry wide in a particular industry and a lot of brands would be cognizant of their own ratios and formally track it. LTV is an even more essential item to know.</p>
<p><span style="color: #008000;">14) Sales Value &#8211; Social-Aided Conversion:</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #008000;">Example:  Estimated conversion rate increase from 2% to 3.5% with an average 100 monthly products sold at $750 = $32,142 more in monthly product sales</span></p>
<p>I feel that this is a strong general metric after going from nothing to maintaining an active social media presence or after a significant change in the way that social media is being used by the brand.</p>
<p>Social media alone may not fully explain a new conversion rate. I’m also not sure how this formula accounts for changes on average # of monthly products sold and average product sales value. A change in conversion rate would change the # of monthly products sold and there may be an effect on value of product sales.</p>
<p>A February 2013 Mashable article had a great social media ROI suggestion.  It suggested to look at overall results, then work backwards. Though that’s not the most concrete way of doing things, I see value in it. Almost every mathematical equation will have some sort of flaw if one looks hard enough, so perhaps one of the simplest suggestions can provide a valuable perspective.</p>

In preparation for the summit, today&#8217;s blog topic is related to tourism marketing.</p>
<p>There are few places where tourism is more important than New Mexico. 32 Million people visit the state annually, which sustains 85,766 local jobs. The Albuquerque Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau recently announced a marketing effort to attract more visitors to New Mexico, but in particular Albuquerque, the state&#8217;s largest city. Between now &amp; September, the ACVB will spend approximately $500,000 targeting leisure travelers from Texas, Arizona, Colorado, California and the Pacific Northwest. It is expected that there will be a combination of traditional and digital messaging efforts.</p>

<p>Although Albuquerque is New Mexico&#8217;s largest city, it&#8217;s not necessarily considered New Mexico&#8217;s hub of tourism. Just an hour north of Albuquerque is Santa Fe, a city known for arts &amp; culture. Santa Fe has numerous well perceived art galleries and museums, as well as the well known Santa Fe Opera and the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Santa Fe is 2,000 feet higher than Albuquerque, reaching an elevation of 7,000 feet, allowing for even cooler summer temperatures. In the winter time, Taos (2 hours north of Albuquerque) offers the most challenging ski area in the state. However, because Santa Fe and Taos are less populated, out of state travelers coming to New Mexico by air arrive at the Albuquerque International Sunport.  A challenge for Albuquerque is being known as more than just the transport hub.</p>
<p>From a tourism standpoint, Albuquerque is most known for Balloon Fiesta, an annual hot air balloon festival held in October. A 2007 New York Times article noted the the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is the world&#8217;s largest festival of hot air balloons. During Balloon Fiesta, hot air balloons can be seen all over the city. That event brings in a lot of visitors and has a significant economic impact. Without Balloon Fiesta, early October might be a quiet time for hotels and other tourist related businesses.</p>
<p>Generally speaking, the ACVB practices multichannel marketing. The ACVB has a well branded corporate website of itsatrip.org. Itsatrip is a unique, distinguishable domain name, providing a <a href="http://distributedmarketing.org/2013/03/07/can-distributed-marketing-management-brands-have-fun-with-their-ads/">fun</a> association with the brand. The ACVB&#8217;s YouTube channel has a good number of videos, many with long lasting appeal. The videos include Petroglyph National Monument, Old Town shopping, museums and art, cuisine etc. I feel that the videos provide good reason to spend more time in Albuquerque on a New Mexico trip, addressing a concern in a previous paragraph. The Facebook feed has over 85,000 Likes, and nearly 4,000 People Talking About This (<a href="http://tinyurl.com/cnx2wuc">PTAT</a>). That is a PTAT percentage of 4.5%, well above the industry standard of 1.4% for major brands. This is showing quality brand engagement.</p>
<p>One of the most famous sayings in digital marketing is &#8216;Content is King&#8217;. The content of this ad campaign has yet to be posted to the various social media sites, but the ACVB has already built campaign awareness through media articles. The campaign is going to make strong use of film themes and terminology, which makes sense as the Albuquerque area has recently been a filming location for feature films and television, such as Breaking Bad.</p>
<p>Amongst the areas that the ACVB is targeting, I strongly feel that Albuquerque could appeal to Texans as a summer tourist destination. The major Texas cities like Dallas &amp; Houston are known to get quite hot in summer time. Albuquerque&#8217;s higher elevation could be a nice respite from the heat, providing a more enchanting summertime experience. As a standalone destination or in combination with other Northern New Mexico destinations, there are outdoor activities, arts, culture, unique topography, etc. It is also within driving distance or a short flight from Texas. There&#8217;s a strong value proposition from the point of view of Texas residents. There are some good economic indicators from Texas, showing that there is a good target market with disposable income to spend. A strong value proposition and disposable income in the target market are usually key parts of a good marketing effort.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll be watching to see how this campaign unfolds. We look forward to a wonderful time at the Simpleview Summit.</p>

<p>For brands, it is vital to be everywhere that your potential target market is. It doesn&#8217;t matter how big the brand is, nor do past brand achievements. Not resting on laurels is a key component of an iconic global brand. Take for instance the Barbie brand, owned by Mattel. Barbie can claim the following achievements.</p>
<ul>
<li>99% global brand awareness</li>
<li>The typical American girl owns 10 Barbie dolls</li>
<li>Annual sales are around $1.6 Billion</li>
<li>The Barbie brand is valued at $2 Billion, making it the world&#8217;s most valuable toy brand</li>

<p>Just from those two very simple marketing statistics, one might easily think that the Barbie brand is set for a very long time. That&#8217;s not necessarily true. While most brand management observers would be impressed with the brand&#8217;s achievements, there are challenges for the brand, just like there are challenges for other iconic brands such as Coca-Cola, McDonald&#8217;s, Apple and others. When challenges arise, so do opportunities. Opportunity presents options for innovation.</p>
<p>Brandchannel recently reported that the brand is going through some revitalization efforts, which is something to be expected for a brand that has been around as long as Barbie has.  A brand must find a way to either revitalize in order to extend the lifespan of the brand or face an inevitable decline and eventual withdrawal from the market. Brands often draw from multiple elements of the marketing mix to extend their period of maturity. In this case, it looks like product features and communication tactics will be the most obvious elements at play. Brandchannel reported that there will be a new playset and a new image for the doll in time for the 2013 holiday shopping season. In the meantime, the Barbie brand is utilizing a variety of marketing communication elements across channels to spearhead their 2013 efforts. There will be a co-branding through real estate website Trulia.com and Bravo&#8217;s &#8220;Million Dollar Listing: Los Angeles&#8221;. This &#8220;real estate listing&#8221; on Trulia where you can buy Barbie&#8217;s Dream House via a reality show real estate agent is a novel concept. This will be part of a digital advertising push on Barbie.com, the Facebook and Twitter sites for the brand, and ads in traditional media, such as US Weekly.</p>
<p>The one thing that I&#8217;ve observed about some of Barbie&#8217;s <a href="http://www.distribion.com/explore-our-solutions/by-marketing-initiative/social-media-marketing">multi-channel marketing</a> communication efforts is the consistent feel of the brand. Consistency is a desired attribute for the vast majority of marketers, and this is often an attribute of strong <a href="http://distributedmarketing.org/2012/09/17/the-rise-of-distributed-marketing-infographic/">centralized marketing control</a>, which is a key tenet of <a href="http://www.distribion.com/access-resources/presentations/presentations-detail?id=106">distributed marketing management</a>.
